HAMMOND | A Forestry Merit Badge program will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, 6201 Parrish Ave. The fee is $5 per Boy/Girl Scout and space is limited. Registration required. Participants must register individually at (219) 844-3188. Scouts will be introduced the principles of forest management. Tree identification, products made from trees, how trees contribute to our environment, land management and fire ecology will be addressed, and scouts will learn to identify the signs of insect infestation. Scouts should bring a field notebook, camera and scientific calculator. Participants should wear sturdy, closed shoes, socks, long pants and bring insect repellant, a hat and a long sleeved shirt. This workshop will follow BSA guidelines and is open to interested Girls Scouts and 4-H members 11 to 18. BSA prerequisites: 1, 6.
