Career Center students help those in need
HAMMOND | Students at the Area Career Center in Hammond know that it is important to be proactive in helping others.
The Student Advisory Council recently held a "Movie Day" for its students, who are from 11 area high schools - Clark, Gavit, Hammond High, Morton, Calumet, Edison, Griffith, Highland, Munster, Lake Central and Whiting - to raise money for the Hammond F.O.P.'s annual Christmas Basket Drive and for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
With almost 100 percent participation from students, "Movie Day" turned out to be a fun event and the donations, along with concession stand proceeds, brought in $1,323.00. The total was equally divided between both organizations.
Some students from the Criminal Justice & Law program became more involved by volunteering their time to help with the delivery of the Hammond F.O.P. Christmas baskets. Not only were baskets of food delivered to the families, but also gift cards.
The students who participated in this felt it helped them understand the true meaning of Christmas, said Area Career Center counselor Cindy Lewis.
