HAMMOND | Lake County's Democratic precinct committeemen are being called to gather at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 to name the next county coroner.
Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., the Democratic party chairman, said they will meet at the Hammond Civic Center to fill the unexpired term of former coroner Thomas Philpot, who was stripped of office after a U.S. District Court jury found him guilty Sept. 24 of five counts of public corruption while serving as Lake County clerk between 2004 and 2009.
McDermott said he supports Crown Point resident Merrilee Frey, who won the Democratic nomination last spring to run in the Nov. 6 general election for a term that begins in 2014. Other Democrats may run against her in the Sept. 15 caucus.
Frey will be opposed in the Nov. 6 general election by Republican Dr. Andy Koultourides, of Munster.
