HAMMOND | The Space Race 5K run/2K walk will step off at 8 a.m. Sunday from the Challenger Learning Center, 2300 173rd St.

The race is open to participants of all ages and costs $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under to register online through Friday. Participants may mail in their registration. The cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.

Race day registrations will be accepted from 7 to 7:45 a.m. and will cost $25 for all participants.

Col. Jerry Ross will be master of ceremonies for the event. He also will be signing copies of his book "Spacewalker."

Participants will be able to tour the Challenger Learning Center and experience space-themed activities for all ages, including laser light shows and tours of the space simulator.

The school or organization with the most participants wins a Family Science Night at the center.

Challenger Learning Center is looking or volunteers and sponsors for the event. Sponsorship levels are $75, $150 and $300.
