HAMMOND | A Chesterton woman was sentenced Monday to more than a year and a half in federal prison in connection to a heroin charge.

Christine Roth, 22, was sentenced to serve 20 months in prison and two years of supervised release.

She pleaded guilty in September to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.

Roth was arrested at Walmart in Valparaiso when an employee stopped her from allegedly stealing more than $100 in merchandise. Police subsequently found heroin in Roth’s purse, and her boyfriend led police into the woods nearby where he showed them a blue pencil bag with syringes, spoons and additional heroin, according to police reports.

Theft charges were later dropped against Roth, and the man was released at the scene.
