HAMMOND | Police arrested a suspect Monday in the fatal shooting of a Chicago man during a weekend bar fight.
Jose Herrera, 30, of the 10000 block of Avenue L in Chicago, died at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Herrera died from a gunshot wound to the head and the death was ruled a homicide.
A dispute just before 2 a.m. Saturday at the Michigan Avenue Bar and Grill at 901 Michigan St. led to the shooting, said Lt. Richard Hoyda, of the Hammond Police Department. It was unclear Monday what prompted the fight.
Herrera was shot in the head and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was later pronounced dead, police said. A 35-year-old unidentified man was shot in the leg, and the wound was not considered life-threatening.
Hoyda said the suspect in the shooting had briefly left the bar during the night but then returned when the shooting happened.
The suspect had not been formally charged by late Monday.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Hammond police at (219) 852-2906 or (219) 853-6490.
