HAMMOND | The Purdue University Calumet School of Nursing recently dedicated its renovated Hospital Simulation Lab, made possible by a $100,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana.
The lab is a simulated hospital environmental clinical teaching facility. It includes a separate medication preparation room; medical equipment storage area; eight new hospital beds with head units that contain suction and oxygen connections; and eight new bedside sphygmomanometers and ophthalmoscopes. The grant also supported remodeling of the lab’s classroom section, including provision of an updated project and instructor console plus tables and chairs.
Equipment within the lab allows nursing students to learn and become proficient at such procedures as dressing changes, tracheotomy care, assessments, insertion of catheters and IVs, and the intravenous infusion of fluids and medication in a modern, simulated hospital environment.
“Having clinical training facilities and equipment that are state-of-the-art is an essential component of nursing education and allows the Purdue Calumet School of Nursing to provide a quality educational experience for our bachelor’s and master’s degree students,” Purdue Calumet Dean of the School of Nursing Peggy Gerard said. “Our School of Nursing administration, faculty and students are very grateful for the donation from Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana that funded the renovation of our Hospital Simulation Lab.”
The Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana is the parent company of three Community Healthcare System hospitals: The Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
“The renovation of our simulation lab allows us to better prepare our students before they begin their hospital clinical rotations,” Gerard said. “This donation reflects CFNI’s commitment to support nursing education at Purdue Calumet and throughout northwest Indiana.”
She added that the opportunity for nursing students to practice in a modern, simulated hospital environment helps develop clinical decision-making skills and expertise that enable high quality patient care.
