HAMMOND | An early morning crash Wednesday on the eastbound Borman Expressway at Cline Avenue sent one man to a local hospital and backed up traffic for miles.

According to Indiana State Police, at 5:18 a.m., a white 2004 Mack semi trailer pulling a box trailer was disabled and parked on the outer shoulder of the eastbound Borman Expressway just west of Cline Avenue with emergency triangles behind it.

A black 2000 Toyota Sienna mini van in the far right lane drove off the road, through the triangles and struck the rear left of the box trailer, police said.

The van split in two on impact. The car parts inside the van were strewn across three lanes of traffic, police said.

The driver of the Toyota, a 37-year-old Maywood, Ill. man, was transported to The Methodist Hospital's Northlake campus in Gary with a laceration on his head and chest injuries. The driver of the semi, a 52-year-old Palos Heights, Ill. man, was not injured.

All lanes of traffic except the left shoulder were closed until about 6 a.m. due to the crash. Lanes slowly reopened as the morning continued, backing up traffic to well past Kennedy Avenue.

All lanes reopened around 8:30 a.m.
