HAMMOND | Lake County Democrats are scheduled to name a new County Council member Saturday to represent Hammond, Whiting and part of Munster in the coming year.

Dozens of precinct committeemen are set to participate in a 10 a.m. caucus at the Civic Center, 5825 Sohl Ave., for the inter-party election.

Two lifelong city residents, David Hamm and Phil Golden, are the only two candidates who have filed for the 1st District seat on the seven-member fiscal body for county government.

One of the two will replace outgoing Councilman Mike Repay, D-Hammond, who must step down Dec. 31 following his recent election to the Board of Lake County Commissioners, the three-member executive body of county government.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. is endorsing Hamm.

"He has been a dear friend of mine for years and a great elected official before I came along...," McDermott said. "I'm looking forward to helping him win."

Hamm has been active in the Democratic Party since he was elected a precinct committeeman in 1977. He also is a past Hammond Democratic city chairman.

Hamm served as a police officer from 1978 to 1980 and a longtime Hammond firefighter. He was elected to the Hammond City Council in 1995, 1999 and 2003.

Hamm resigned from the council eight years ago to become city fire chief, where he continued until his retirement last year.

Repay said he supports Golden, who he said would bring private-sector experience and competence to the job of overseeing county government spending.

"Phil would have an outside perspective," Repay said.

Golden is a St. Joseph's College graduate who has worked 16 years in the social services field. He is a precinct committeeman in the 4th District and has served as a member of the city's Redevelopment Commission for the past three years.
