HAMMOND | A 26-year-old East Chicago man was shot and killed in a vehicle in Hammond early Tuesday, officials said.

Kelvin Campbell Jr., 26, of the 3900 block of Catalpa Street, was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. in the 3600 block of Orchard Drive, Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey said.

The cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds suffered in a homicide.

Lt. Richard Hoyda, spokesman for the Hammond Police Department, said officers responded at 12:22 a.m. to a report of shots fired in the 3600 block of Orchard Drive. When officers arrived, they found Campbell in a red Chrysler dead from multiple gunshot wounds. 

Hoyda said the shots were fired into the vehicle and the victim appeared to have been targeted by the offender.
