LAKE COUNTY | An East Chicago man was airlifted to a Chicago-area trauma center after crashing into the back of a semitrailer early Saturday on Cline Avenue near the Borman Expressway.

Lake County police responded about 4 a.m. to a location on southbound Cline Avenue near the Interstate 80/94 ramp for a report of an accident. When officers arrived, they found a Dodge Dakota had rear-ended a semitrailer.

The pickup driver, Noel Flores, of East Chicago, was airlifted to a Chicago-area trauma center, police said. The extent of his injuries was not known.

The California man who was driving the semi and his passenger were not injured.

Police said Flores was driving on a suspended driver's license.

Witnesses said the crash blocked all lanes of southbound traffic for more than three hours. Traffic was able to pass on the inside shoulder.

The crash remained under investigation Saturday afternoon.
