HAMMOND | A total of 87 chess teams in the sixth grade and under section of the State of Indiana gathered at five different Regionals for an opportunity to be selected as one of the 34 teams to meet at the State Team Finals held in Terre Haute on March 26.
Both Edison and Morton Elementary had the distinct honor of having two teams each qualify from the Hammond Regional to be a part of those 34 teams.
The Hammond Regional was the largest in the state with 11 teams being chosen from its tournament. At the conclusion of the State Finals, Edison captured the 8th place trophy as they had the previous year. Their top player Xavier Cervantes finished with a nearly perfect record of 4.5 points out of 5. Other members of the team were Quinn Flanagan, Josue Moreno, Analisa Sada and Camille Spitler.
Morton Elementary's board 4 player Danny Garza led their team with 4 points and along with team members Eric Crozier, Donovan SantaMaria and Donye Anderson captured the 10th place trophy. Edison is coached by Jeff and Dee Spitler and Morton is coached by Bob Mattson.
