HAMMOND | A former Gary officer was sentenced Friday to two years and six months in federal prison, according to court records.

David Finley, 32, of Merrillville, pleaded guilty Feb. 27 to federal charges of making a false statement during a purchase of a firearm and distributing marijuana, according to a plea agreement. He was originally charged with distributing cocaine, but the charge was dropped when officials discovered it was "sham cocaine."

In August, prosecutors asked a judge to sentence Finley to 42 months in prison after they discovered some of the character letters he submitted were fake and others had been altered, according to sentencing memorandum. Finley had asked a judge to sentence him to probation or home detention.

Finley will have to complete two years of supervised release following his time in prison.
