HAMMOND | A jury trial was set Thursday for a trio accused of being involved in a home sale scheme in Northwest Indiana.
Minas Litos, Adrian Tartareanu and Daniela Tartareanu are scheduled to stand trial Feb. 17. According to court records, they face federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and 16 counts of wire fraud.
The alleged scheme involved 40 houses, some of which were in Gary and Cedar Lake. The group, using a St. John business, would buy and sell homes and help buyers secure a loan from a third party without putting a down payment on the properties, according to court records.
The group is accused of defrauded lenders of more than $2.5 million. The three also are accused of fronting about $600,000 on down payments so that buyers could secure third-party loans.
After the properties were sold, many buyers defaulted on loans and homes were left vacant.
