HAMMOND | Firefighters contained a large brush fire along Interstate 80/94 near Indianapolis Boulevard about 9 p.m. Saturday, according to Indiana State Police.
Police said the fire was out briefly, but it started up again. As of 9 p.m., firefighters had the flames under control, police said.
Firefighters from Gary, Hammond, Highland and East Chicago responded to the scene, which is in a brush area behind a White Castle location.
Hammond Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Margraf was concerned about a possible limited water supply in that area creating difficulties in quelling the flames.
The fire had closed Indianapolis Boulevard between Interstate 80/94 and Ridge Road. Police said the fire wasn't affecting traffic on Interstate 80/94 Saturday night.
Fire crews remained at the scene late Saturday.
