HAMMOND | A city firefighter rescued a dog from a house fire in the 7400 block of Oakdale on Saturday, the chief fire inspector said.
Michael Opinker, chief fire inspector for the Hammond Fire Department, said a dog and a cat were the home's only occupants when a neighbor reported the fire about 5 p.m. Saturday.
Assistant Engineer Gregory Janicki saved the dog from the home, but a cat still was missing, Opinker said. He said the fire started and was contained in the attic.
He said firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to get at the fire. The house and most of the family's personal belongings were saved, although they sustained some water damage, Opinker said.
He said the fire was accidental, though the official cause is undetermined.
