HAMMOND | Firefighters were battling a large fire at Midwestern Steel Fabricators in an industrial park in Hammond late Monday night.
Hammond Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Margraf said firefighters arrived at 8:30 p.m. at 1745 165th St.
Margraf said there was no one in the building when the fire broke out. There were no reported injuries as of Monday night.
Margraf said officials did not know yet what started the fire.
He said firefighters were having trouble putting out the fire because of the height of the building. He said only a portion of the building was on fire.
Smoke could be seen coming from the large building from 165th Street, which remained open to motorists.
Midwestern Steel Fabricators is one of several businesses in the R & R Industrial Park.
Margraf said Hammond firefighters were the only ones on scene late Monday. The East Chicago Fire Department was providing mutual aid to one of the city's fire stations.
The blaze was still being battled at press time.
