HAMMOND | Sentencing hearings were set Wednesday for two former Lake County Sheriff's Department officers who have pleaded guilty to public corruption charges.
Joseph Kumstar and Ronald Slusser, both of Crown Point, are scheduled to be sentenced in federal court in June, according to federal court records.
Kumstar and Slusser were indicted in 2011 with fellow former police officer Edward Kabella for conspiring to use their positions on the department to buy machine guns and laser sights.
The items were meant solely for the use of law enforcement or military officials, but the barrels from the guns and the laser sights were sold for profit.
U.S. District Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen sentenced Kabella in January to two years in prison for his involvement in the scheme.
Kumstar and Slusser's cases are in U.S. District Judge James Moody's courtroom.
A sentencing hearing for Slusser is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 26. Kumstar's hearing is set for 10 a.m. June 27.
Slusser's attorney, Visvaldis Kupsis, said he did not have a comment on the scheduling. Kumstar's attorney did not return a request for comment as of Wednesday afternoon.
