HAMMOND | Bishop Noll Institute students received a rare treat recently when former NFL defensive end Jared Tomich spoke with students, faculty and staff as part of Catholic Schools Week festivities.
Tomich, of Schererville, attended Lake Central High School and was a walk-on at the University of Nebraska, where he became a two-time All-American, helping the Cornhuskers win two national championships.
Tomich spent seven years in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
He gave an inspiring presentation to the students about both his personal and professional life, overcoming struggles with a learning disability and poor grades as a high school student, to achieve academic and athletic success in college and professional sports.
After his career with the NFL ended in 2003, Tomich returned to northwest Indiana and now owns a number of businesses with his wife, 1993 BNI alumna Michalene Pavnica Tomich, including FUEL Fitness Centers and Ignite Sports Performance Centers.
He and his wife are the co-founders of the Halo of Hope Foundation, which allows local children struggling with cancer to forget their illnesses for a week while they attend summer camps around the U.S. Tomich hopes to grow the foundation so that more children can participate in these life changing camps, as well as assisting families with tutoring, counseling and financial support.
After his remarks, Tomich answered questions from the students and spent time taking photos and signing autographs for many BNI students.
