HAMMOND | Free field trip tours of a Northwest Indiana Civil War historical exhibit are being offered to region schools.

Teachers and school administrators are invited to schedule tours of the exhibit — Region United, Nation Divided: Civil War in the South Shore — which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through May 3 at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond.

The Times Investigative Editor Marc Chase, who helped design the exhibit for the South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail, already is scheduled to lead guided tours of the exhibit for three region schools, and more opportunities are available.

The exhibit includes hundreds of photos, artifacts, narrative text and battle flag reproductions, all telling the story of Northwest Indiana's participants in the nation's bloodiest war.

To schedule a field trip, contact Rik Piszczek, visitor services manager, at (219) 554-2954. The Welcome Center is off of Interstate 80/94 at the South Kennedy Avenue exit.

More than 1,600 people have visited the Civil War exhibit since it opened April 6.
