CROWN POINT | Three Gary men arrested by Hammond police face charges of felony murder and murder in the perpetration of a robbery in the death of a Hammond man on Dec. 17.
The Lake County prosecutor’s office has filed a probable cause affidavit in Lake Superior Court against Marvel Arnez Harper, Dontrell Demetrius Hughes and Marcus Anthony Flanagan in the shooting death of David Alexander Jr., 32, near Carroll Street and Alice Avenue in Hammond.
Hammond police responded to reports of gunshots fired about 12:30 a.m. Dec. 17, said Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller.
Alexander died later that day at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after suffering a single gunshot wound to his head as the result of an apparent homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Court records state a witness interviewed by Hammond police said she picked up the two men she knew as “Trigger” (Flanagan) and “Devious” (Hughes) and a third man she called “the little Mexican guy” (Harper) and brought them to her house on Alice Street for a drug deal. Harper was identified by another witness as “Villain."
She said the three suspects carried guns and began beating Alexander (aka “D-Lo") in the face while he sat in his car, which was in front of her house.
According to the affidavit, her son told police officers that Alexander began running down Carroll Street toward Calumet Avenue. That witness said he watched “Trigger” shoot Alexander five times.
A third witness told police the three men talked about robbing “D-Lo” and “that this guy had to die.” She also stated that Harper dropped his gun in front of her house.
Another witness said the three men were inside her house after the shooting and that Harper had blood on his shoes and his black hoodie. She also stated Harper gave her boyfriend, Jonathan Lira, a “hot gun” she described as a black handgun and told Lira to hold on to it.
Lira was later arrested by Hammond police officers on several charges, pertaining to the possession of a handgun, the court records state.
