HAMMOND | There have been some very exciting things happening within the Performing Arts department at Donald E. Gavit Middle/High School. This past weekend was the Indiana State School Music Association Festival where the Gavit’s Band and Choir both competed.
At the festival, the Advanced High School Chorus, consisting of twenty seven students, performed three songs: “Pete, Pete!” (a folk song from Ghana), “Riversong” (a nature-inspired contemporary choral piece), and “Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel” (an African-American Spiritual). Their performances won Gold medals in both Sight Reading and Performing, giving them an overall Gold for the Festival.
Gavit’s Band, conducted by Mrs. Nancy Talley, had a fantastic competition at ISSMA too. This year was the first the first time that the band performed in an organizational contest. They received Silver.
Coming later this month will be Gavit’s Musical Theatre Showcase. This annual event allows students the unique opportunity of performing for their school and community and highlights all of their many talents.
With more than thirty students participating this year, the Showcase will display the multifaceted abilities of the entire performing arts department ranging from acting to signing to dancing to set design. Students will be performing musical numbers from RENT, Grease, Wicked, and Hairspray. Students will also be performing scenes by a multitude of playwrights, including one student written script, as well Poetry in Action.
The showcase will be at 7 p.m. on April 26 and April 27.
