Gavit High School science department hard at work

HAMMOND | Students in the Gavit High School science department have been actively pursuing their education in recent days.

Forensic Science students were scoping out the differences in the cuticle patterns of several types of mammal hairs, including squirrel, dog, cat, raccoon, deer and human.

Using both digital and standard microscopes, students learned that the cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair and each mammal has its own unique pattern. This information may be helpful to a forensic scientist as he tries to determine the origin of a hair found at a crime scene.

Across the hall the physics students were jumping for the opportunity to see who had the most power. They went to the gym and jumped to measure their hang time and their vertical distance. Finally, they calculated the work and power exerted by each student. When all was done, students were able to calculate the most powerful male and female in the class!
