HAMMOND | Students from Edison Elementary School and Gavit Middle-High School recently competed in the 17th annual Hammond Invitational Chess Tournament held at Morton High School.
It was checkmate for both schools as they captured team and individual trophies in a number of categories.
Gavit High School turned in a very successful day as all four members of the team earned individual trophies. Team leader Katlyn Bonnell took third place, Carlos Salgado won fifth place, Vanessa Maya finished in sixth place and Ronny Bonnell claimed the eighth-place trophy.
Their combined scores earned them the first-place team trophy by a margin of more than five points.
Gavit Middle School sixth-grader Maxwell Wolf won the seventh-place individual trophy as Gavit captured the third-place team trophy. This was due to a strong finish by team members Matthew Wallington, Camille Spitler, Nickolas Travis and Analisa Sada.
In the Grade 5 and Under section, Josue Moreno grabbed the second-place individual trophy while Rebecca Manning and Ryan Manning won eighth- and ninth-place individual trophies, respectively. Along with Veronica Maya, their combined scores earned them the second-place team trophy.
In the Grade 3 and Under section, Edison captured the first-place team trophy, while team leader Xander Cervantes won eighth place as an individual.
Both the Edison and Gavit teams are coached by Jeff and Dee Spitler, along with Ed and Janet Blanco and Jesse Schmidt Sr.
