HAMMOND | America is on the move to raise a healthier generation of kids. According to the website www.letsmove.gov, Let's Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. It is a very ambitious goal but can be accomplished if everyone gets involved. Below are the five pillars of the First Lady’s Let’s Move!

Initiative:

1. Creating a healthy start for children

2. Empowering parents and caregivers

3. Providing healthy food in schools

4. Improving access to healthy, affordable foods

5. Increasing physical activity

Supporting the fifth initiative, the Oceans Community's team of teachers planned a field trip designed to encourage physical activity. Gavit Middle School students recently visited Vertical Endeavors in Warrenville, IL.

Located less than 30 miles from downtown Chicago, Vertical Endeavors is one of the largest rock climbing gyms in the Midwest. The facility offers 18,000 square feet of climbing. With bouldering areas, auto belays, top ropes, and lead climbing, Vertical Endeavors has something for everyone from the first-timers to experienced climbers.

According to William Butler Yeats, “Education is not the filling of the pail but the lighting of a fire.” In an era of fewer funds available for field trips, teachers must choose wisely in order to maximize the experiences they want to offer their students. This field trip was a positive one, exposing the students to a unique physical activity while creating a sense of community with their peers and teachers.

As evident by the big smile on D’zyre Singleton's face, it was a great day
