HAMMOND | Gavit Middle School students have made tremendous progress in their reading comprehension this past school year.
In previous years, we noticed that many of our students experience the “summer slide”. After having worked so hard during the school year, they do not engage in reading over the summer; therefore, they experience a “slide” in their reading comprehension. This summer, we are supporting the Superintendent of Instruction, Glenda Ritz’s efforts to develop a culture of readers in Indiana. We are working to prevent the “summer slide” by encouraging all middle school students to participate in our summer reading program.
This year’s summer reading program is digital! Before the end of the school year, the students logged in to the digital library at www.myON.com. They completed an interest inventory and took a quiz to determine their lexile (reading level). They now have a tab of recommended books that are in their lexile range and that cover the topics in which they are interested.
As of July 1 we had 159 students who have read more than five books based on their reading level. To celebrate this success, Gavit held a book talk/ pizza party on July 16. Everyone enjoyed sharing their own personal favorite summer book with each other. Surprisingly not one student had the same book to share. We are extremely proud of our Gladiators! Way to go!
