HAMMOND | The city has accepted some property for its biking and pedestrian trail and transfered other trail property to a state agency.
The parent company of the lakefront Horseshoe Casino conveyed a section of its sidewalk on Casino Center Drive to Hammond as part of the trail system to connect Northwest Indiana with downtown Chicago.
A federally funded stretch of the trail on the city's south side also was put under jurisdiction of the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission through an agreement between the city, town of Highland and the commission.
The river segment of the recreational trail runs along a flood control levee built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Ultimately, the planned Marquette Greenway Trail would provide a continuous path for nonmotorized transportation from Millennium Park in Chicago to New Buffalo, Mich.
