HAMMOND | Five people were arrested and one bar cited for the presence of minors Friday in an inspection sweep by the Hammond Police Department and state excise police.
The arrests occurred at Porters Tap, 6405 Kennedy Ave., AquaVor, 5260 Hohman Ave., and Jason's Bar and Grill, 3949 Hohman Ave., said Cpl. Travis Thickstun, spokesman Indiana State Excise Police.
Markest Hunter, 24, of Thornton, Ill., was arrested at Porters Tap on charges of possessing marijuana, Thickstun said. At Jason's Bar and Grill, Michael Cox, 24, of Hammond, was arrested on charges of possessing marijuana and cocaine, Thickstun said.
Three minors were arrested at AquaVor after police found Luis Ozuma, 19, Francisco Bernal, 20, and Francisco Miranda, 19, all of Hammond, inside the bar. State excise also cited the bar for allowing minors to loiter, Thickstun said.
Thickstun said the compliance checks were conducted at the bars after complaints of alleged gang activity, drug use and minors consuming alcoholic beverages.
Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said he appreciates the collaboration his department has with state excise police.
"They're very responsive to our requests for assistance," Miller said. "We will continue to do bar compliance checks. We think it's a good program."
