CROWN POINT | Lake Criminal Court Judge Salvador Vasquez sentenced 30-year-old Rolando Diaz to 40 years in prison Thursday for a 2011 bar shooting.

Diaz, who listed addresses in both Hammond and Whiting, pleaded guilty earlier this month to aggravated battery charges alleging he shot and wounded two men Oct. 8, 2011, in a confrontation outside the Robertsdale Inn in the 1400 block of Calumet Avenue in Hammond.

Police said Diaz was in one of two groups of men from rival street gangs making threatening gestures at each other around 2:20 a.m.

Two Chicago police officers eating in a restaurant across the street and an off-duty Hammond policeman working security at the restaurant chased and captured Diaz shortly afterward.
