Hammond City Council to discuss 'Cash for Gold' ordinance
HAMMOND| A plan to curb the sale of stolen merchandise in the city will come before the City Council on Monday.
The proposed ordinance requires "cash for gold" businesses, scrap dealers and pawn brokers to pay by check when buying items from sellers.
Council President Michael Opinker, of District 5, said the payment method will allow items to be traced back to sellers in the event stolen merchandise is sold.
"It's alleviating people stealing stuff and trying to get rid of it in Hammond," Opinker said.
The Finance Committee will meet at 5 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 5925 Calumet Ave., on the proposed ordinance. The regular City Council meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
