HAMMOND | The Hammond City Council will debate banning council members from using gaming dollars to fund Dumpsters for neighborhood cleanups in the city at Monday's meeting.
Councilwoman Janet Venecz, D-at large, who is a sponsor on the ordinance that bans the practice, said it's meant to curb contractors from taking advantage of the Dumpsters to discard items from illegal rehabs.
However, Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. has expressed concern on gaming money going to fund Dumpsters and has said the ordinance would clean up the allowable uses of those dollars.
The council's Redevelopment Committee will meet at 5 p.m. on a separate ordinance that will allow the city to prepare payments to Unilever and Munster from left over tax increment financing districts, and then directly after hold a committee meeting on the Dumpster ban.
The regular council meeting will begin at 6 p.m. inside Council Chambers of City Hall, 5925 Calumet Ave.
