HAMMOND | The city is hiring new police officers to fill positions left vacant by attrition, Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said.
The department is seeking candidates who are already police academy certified because the hirings are being done on an emergency basis.
Miller said the department likely will hire six officers because its budgeted capacity is 211 officers and currently 205 officers are employed. The department has lost officers to retirement or illness and several officers have signed up to retire in 2014.
Miller said the goal is for the new officers to come on the department by June.
Candidates must meet a wide range of requirements, including having a valid Indiana driver's license at the time of hire, be a high school graduate or possess a GED and submit to a voice stress analysis test, psychological evaluation and physical examination, among other requirements.
Starting pay will be at $40,083 or $48,116 with three or more years of police experience.
