CROWN POINT | A 19-year-old man is accused of setting a home on fire in the 1500 block of Summer Street in Hammond earlier this month, police said.

Eduardo Ivel Jr., of Hammond, was charged Tuesday with arson. He was being held Thursday at the Hammond City Jail on $30,000 bail, according to court records.

Early on June 10, Jose Galvan looked outside his bedroom window and saw a man outside his home holding a torch and shotgun, according to the affidavit. Another man was with the armed suspect.

Galvan called police and then discovered a portion of his house was on fire along with his truck, according to the affidavit. Both suspects ran from the scene.

The homeowner recognized one of the suspects as "Smiley," who was later identified as Ivel, according to the affidavit.

Video surveillance from the house also shows Ivel and the other man pouring something on the house and then using the torch to ignite the fire, according to court records.
