HAMMOND | A 32-year-old man was fatally shot early Sunday, allegedly as part of an ongoing neighborhood dispute, officials said.
Timothy Brewer Sr. died after suffering gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
Coroner's investigators were called to the 7200 block of McLaughlin Avenue about 3:45 a.m. Sunday after Brewer was shot about two houses down from his home, according to a news release.
Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said Brewer and a 20-year-old man exchanged gunfire early Sunday as part of a longtime feud.
The 20-year-old had minor injuries. He was treated at a local hospital and released, Miller said.
No other injuries were reported to officials. A car was struck during the gunfire.
Brewer had a small-caliber handgun and the 20-year-old had a larger-caliber handgun, Miller said.
The two men lived four houses apart, Miller said.
The 20-year-old was in police custody as of late Sunday as investigators worked on the homicide investigation.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Sgt. Tom Textor or Lt. Mike Daniels at (219) 852-2906.
