CROWN POINT | A 24-year-old Hammond man was sentenced Tuesday to serve 38 years in prison for molesting the 9-year-old child of a family with whom he was living at the time.
Ventris Hulitt also was ordered to serve much of that sentence, in part because of the age of the child. He will receive one day's credit for every six served. The standard calls for one day's credit for each day served.
Upon his release, Hulitt must also register as a sex offender for life.
Jurors found Hulitt guilty last month of child molesting. He also had been charged with sexual battery and confinement in the case.
Hulitt was accused of having assaulted the girl while he was living temporarily with her family in Merrillville for several months between Sept. 1, 2009, and Feb. 28, 2010.
The girl told police Hulitt would wake her after her father left for work to shower with her before she went to school. The acts progressed from washing the girl's back to performing sexual acts while showering.
The girl was later diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease.
