HAMMOND | A 21-year-old man was killed after being gunned down early Sunday at a party on the 600 block of Sibley Street in Hammond, police said.
Jeffrey Morgan, of the 6400 block of Monroe Avenue in Hammond, died from multiple gunshot wounds about 1:27 a.m., according to a release from the Lake County coroner's office.
He died at the scene.
The death is the city's first homicide of the year.
Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said the shooting happened at a party, but didn't have any other information about what led to shots being fired.
Hammond police Chief Brian Miller said the shooting happened in the living room of the house where about 50 people were present. He said the people at the party probably know who the shooter was since the person was at the party as well.
Miller said the homeowner, who was an acquaintance of Morgan, was shot in the foot, but told police he didn't want to file charges because he didn't have time to do so.
"We hope people who attended the party do have time for this and give us a call," he said. "We believe several people may know the shooter."
Neighbors said they heard arguing and gunshots early Sunday, but declined to further comment on the shooting. The house is on a busy street less than a mile from downtown Hammond.
Miller said police had not been called out this weekend to the house prior to the shooting.
Hoyda said detectives were interviewing whoever they could find to come forward with information. Police had not identified any suspects as of Sunday evening.
Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call the Hammond Police Department at (219) 852-2906.
