HAMMOND | A 54-year-old Hammond man was shot and killed in the backyard of his home late Wednesday, police said.

Thomas Thompson, 54, of the 7100 block of Oakdale Avenue, was pronounced dead at 11:57 p.m. in the emergency room at The Community Hospital in Munster, a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office said.

The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds suffered in a homicide.

Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said the homicide occurred sometime before 11:38 p.m.

"There was some type of verbal confrontation in the backyard of the victim's home that resulted in a shooting and homicide," Hoyda said.
