HAMMOND | A Robertsdale man remained hospitalized in serious condition Monday after being shot while using the video rental machine outside a North Hammond pharmacy Saturday, police said.
The 27-year-old man told police he was on the phone with his family while making a selection from the Redbox machine at Walgreens in the 4400 block of Calumet Avenue shortly before 4 a.m. when he heard gunfire and realized he had been hit.
Witnesses told police they saw a man step out of the sliding door of a tan mid-1990s Mercury Villager minivan that had turned off Calumet Avenue and stopped on Gostlin Street. He fired several shots toward the man using the video rental machine.
The alleged shooter then got back inside and the van went east on Gostlin Street, witnesses said.
The man was taken to an Illinois trauma center with a single gunshot wound to the back of his neck and shoulder area, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Hammond police Detective Sgt. Dan Small at (219) 852-2976.
