First of all, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year!

The City of Hammond has a full year of events planed in 2013.

Please join Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. and the Hammond Parks and Recreation Department as they present Saturday Recreation, starting Jan. 5 and continuing through March 30.

Saturday Recreation is a supervised program open to Hammond children ages 5 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at Morton Elementary School, 7006 Marshall Ave. Registration is required; for more information, call the Hammond Civic Center at (219) 853-6378.

Upcoming youth activities being held at the Jean Shepherd Community Center include Hessville Little League sign-ups from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 12. Call the community center at (219) 554-0155 with any questions.

Please join us for the “Perfecting the Dream” Martin Luther King Jr. Walk beginning at 6:45 a.m. Jan. 21 at Hammond City Hall, 5925 Calumet Ave., and walking to the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 Sohl Ave.

Mayor McDermott and the Hammond Parks and Recreation Department invites everyone to our 29th annual Hammond Outdoor Sports Show on Jan. 26 and 27 at the Jean Shepherd Community Center. Show times are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Parking is free. Admission for adults is $5 and children 11 and younger will be admitted free. Free goodie bags will be distributed to the first 300 people on both days. For more information, call (219) 554-0155.

These are just a few events to kick off the new year. We have so much more planned, too, including our popular Sweetheart Dance, Sports Hall of Fame Dinner, Pampered Woman’s Show, Cinco De Mayo, Senior Prom and, last but not least, our 10th anniversary Festival of the Lakes. Watch for announcements concerning these events and many more, including the schedule at the Pavilion at Wolf Lake.
