HAMMOND | Hammond police defused a situation Friday at St. John the Baptist School where a student was threatening to harm herself with a knife.
Principal Marilyn Tomko said no one was harmed in the incident that occurred about 10:45 a.m., and the student was taken to the hospital for further care.
Tomko said a note was sent home to parents explaining that an upper-grade student threatening to harm herself spoke to a teacher, who took her into an empty classroom. The school office and emergency personnel, along with the student's parents, were immediately contacted, Tomko said.
Counseling will be made available for students at the school Monday.
