HAMMOND | A Hammond resident was hospitalized for a gunshot wound to the abdomen from a dispute Friday morning, Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said.

The shooter fled the scene. Police do not have a description of him.

At 2 a.m. on 800 block of Spruce Street, several gunshots were fired after a neighbor heard shouting and swearing from the residence.

The neighbor said when he realized the gunshots were not fireworks he called the police. The wounded resident, a man in his 30s, was airlifted to a hospital. Miller said the wound is survivable.

Police said alcohol was involved in the dispute.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Michael Nemcek or Capt. Zeke Hinojosa at (219) 852-2906.
