HAMMOND | A local restaurant will remain closed as fire officials try to find a cause for a blaze a passing motorist reported Sunday morning.

A motorist called 911 after seeing smoke pouring from The Wheel Family Restaurant early Sunday.

The last employees left the restaurant about a half hour before the driver called in the fire, Hammond Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Margraf said.

Officials were not sure what started the blaze at 7430 Indianapolis Blvd., but were hoping to find a cause within the next few days.

“There's a lot of damage,” Margraf said. “But it's going to be repairable.”

The fire damaged the kitchen area, but there was also water damage and roof concerns, he said.

“We had to cut some holes in the roof to get at some embers,” Margraf said.

However, the owners told fire officials they hoped to get the damage fixed and reopen the restaurant as soon as possible, he said.

“There's a lot of cleanup that needs to be done,” Margraf said.
