HAMMOND | Edison Elementary and Gavit Middle/High school chess players combined to win eight trophies  at the Bizarre Bazaar Chess Tournament held Sept. 21 at Harrison Park downtown.

In the Third Grade and Under division, Xander Cervantes from Edison claimed second place while his teammates, Veronica Maya, Sarah Novak and Rebecca Manning, demonstrated "girl power" by taking first- through third-place in the Fifth Grade and Under category.

In the High School division, Katlyn Bonnell, last year's runner-up in the Girls Indiana State Championship, took second-place for Gavit High School, while Edison/Gavit chess coach Jeff Spitler,  Ron Bonnell (Katlyn's father) and assistant coach Jesse Schmidt captured first- through third-place in the Adult division.

Both schools are coached by Jeff and Dee Spitler.
