HAMMOND | Student chess masters from Gavit Middle-High School and Edison Elementary School returned with a number of trophies recently as students met at five Regional tournaments throughout the state to vie for a qualifying spot at the Scholastic Chess of Indiana Individual Chess Championships in Indianapolis.
The Gavit group was led by Matthew Wallington, who was perfect with five wins in the Regional and another five wins at the state finals, earning him the Sixth-grade JV Indiana State Championship trophy.
Also in the Sixth-grade JV section, Maxwell Wolf captured the seventh-place trophy, followed by team members Analisa Sada, Eric Johnson, Camille Spitler and Nickolas Travis.
Two other Gavit individuals won trophies in the High School Division. With a strong finish, Katlyn Bonnell placed eighth, competing with team members Ronny Bonnell and Timothy Gomez. Carlos Salgado captured the seventh-place trophy in the Eighth-grade JV section, followed by team members Vanessa Maya, Yatziri Moreno, Kathleen Reyna, Tyler Loebbaka and Noah Maravilla.
Edison Elementary School qualified two students in the Third-grade and Under section. Xander Cervantes and Andrea Salgado both won trophies. Josue Moreno won a trophy in the Sixth-grade Championship section. The six state qualifiers for Edison in the Sixth-grade JV section were Veronica Maya, Ryan Manning, Lilia Wolf, Jesse Schmidt Jr., Rebecca Manning and Nathaniel Drechney.
The teams are coached by Jeff and Dee Spitler, Jesse Schmidt Sr., and Ed and Janet Blanco.
