HAMMOND | The Hammond Academy for the Performing Arts at Morton High School will premiere its spring theater season with “The Wiz," written by William F. Brown with music by Charlie Smalls.
Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and March 15 and 16, and at 2 p.m. Sundays, March 10 and 17 at Morton High School, 6915 Grand Ave. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for students. Call (219) 989-7316, ext. 1889 to reserve tickets.
The production is directed and choreographed by Kathleen Dominiak Treasure, with musical direction from Dan Cummins, Holly Mocabee and Greg Easton, set design by Zachary Gipson, lights designed by Guy Rhodes and costumes designed by Melissa Brassard.
"The Wiz" transforms “The Wizard of Oz” into a fun, funky modern musical version. Dorothy, the little girl from Kansas is, blown by a tornado into Munchkinland in the Land of Oz. While there she meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion on the Yellow Brick Road.
She defeats the evil witch and goes to see the powerful Wizard to get home, but he turns out to be a phony. However, the Wizard is able to convince Dorothy that she can do anything she wants if she just believes in herself. Dorothy also realizes the importance of home and family.
