HAMMOND | Thirty people were arrested Wednesday morning during a warrant sweep, Hammond police said.
Police Chief Brian Miller said arrests were made on myriad felony and misdemeanor charges ranging from possession of a sawed-off shotgun to burglary. The majority of misdemeanor warrants were for battery, Miller said in an email.
The department conducted the sweep between 4 and 10 a.m., and 33 police officers took part in the operation. Miller said all the subjects were arrested in Hammond at their residences.
“This operation went as smooth as ... this type of operation can go,” Miller said. “It went perfect. We will be doing this again definitely in the near future.”
One suspect hid from police in an attic, leading officers to call for a K-9 to search the space, Miller said. The person surrendered once the K-9 entered the home, Miller said.
No injuries were reported during the operation.
East Chicago, Gary and Highland police assisted in the sweep, Miller said.
