HAMMOND | Traffic officers wrote 343 tickets for seat belt and child restraint violations during a June safety enforcement action, according to figures released by police.
An additional 142 citations were written for license and equipment violations, as well as misdemeanor arrests for impaired driving during the annual Click It or Ticket campaign, said Lt. Patrick Vicari, traffic division commander for the Hammond Police Department.
Hammond police ran 25 extra patrols in their part of the statewide blitz, Vicari said, with 116 hours of overtime funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute's Traffic Safety Division.
Further seat belt enforcement actions and sobriety checkpoints are planned in Hammond this month, Vicari said.
