CROWN POINT | A Hazel Crest, Ill., man was sentenced Thursday to 45 years in prison for a bloody attack on a 77-year-old man, the ex-husband of a woman he was dating.
A Lake County Superior Court jury had found David Harman, 48, guilty of attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery Feb. 1.
The victim, J.R. Jenkins, of Hammond, was assaulted May 31, 2011, suffering numerous injuries from the beating, including a cut to his throat extending nearly ear to ear.
According to court documents, Jenkins identified Harman as his attacker to police while hospitalized in an Oak Lawn, Ill., hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Medical personnel told police the beating left Jenkins with swelling of the brain and a 15-centimeter slash across his throat.
Other witnesses told police Jenkins was covered in blood when seeking assistance after having been pulled off his porch and struck several times in the face.
