Henry Schrage mug

Henry Schrage, who founded the Bank of Whiting, which became Centier Bank, was an early pioneer of Whiting. Schrage served as a private in an Illinois regiment during the Civil War and moved to Northwest Indiana sometime shortly after the war ended. In 2012, Schrage's Hammond grave received a new special granite marker commemorating his Civil War service. The marker was funded through grants and contributions obtained by the Calumet Region Civil War Preservation Project volunteer organization.
