HAMMOND | A 32-year-old Highland man arrested by Hammond police has been charged with a federal count of illegally entering the country after being deported as a felon.
The man was identified in federal court files unsealed Thursday as Ulises Barcenas-Casto, also known as Hiram Joel Perez-Diaz, of 8851 Schneider Ave.
Hammond police notified federal authorities Sept. 25 that they discovered Barcenas-Castro is an illegal immigrant while investigating him for violations of state law.
Federal authorities learned Barcenas-Castro was deported to Mexico on Dec. 27, 2005, had been convicted in Florida for robbery and was sentenced to three years behind bars.
Officials were unable to find any record of Barcenas-Castro legally re-entering the United States and said he does not have any pending petitions with the U.S. Department of Citizenship & Immigration Services.
